Summer is just around the corner, and so is the season of high energy consumption for the average household. Your water heater may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to getting ready for summer. However, this appliance works hard all year long to heat and store water for showers, dishwashing, laundry, and more. When the seasons change, your hot water needs will probably change, too. By making a few simple adjustments to your water heater, you can make your unit more energy efficient for the summer. Here are two easy tips to get you started.
1. Lower Water Temperature
Most water heaters are set to 140°F by default. This may be great for winter, but it’s usually unnecessary to heat water to this level with the higher ambient temperatures of summer. To avoid spending unnecessary energy, manually lower your water heater’s temperature by 10-20°F. The very minimum temperature should be 120°F, which is the temperature most experts recommend for preventing bacteria growth.
If you have a tankless water heater, simply open your unit’s settings and adjust the temperature from there, similar to a thermostat. For gas or electric water heaters, you may be able to see the temperature control dial near the bottom of the tank, or you may have to use a screwdriver to access it from behind a control panel. For safety, locate the circuit breaker and cut off the electricity supply before making adjustments to any of your appliances.
2. Set the Timer
A timer enables you to choose when your water heater will run, conserving the energy it would otherwise be spending if it were left to run continuously. On most models, setting the timer requires choosing a time for the unit to turn on and a second time for the unit to turn off. Some may allow you to program multiple timers in a day. As a rule of thumb, plan to start your water heater around 30 minutes before you need hot water, such as your morning shower. If your unit lacks a timer, a licensed plumber can easily install one for you.
